It’s been such a great day. It all went so well. Thank you, Lord. I wouldn’t change a thing if I could. I frowned lightly. Well. I might change this. This is a little annoying. I couldn’t sleep. It was, like, 11 o’clock, and I couldn’t get my mind to shut off. It was still racing from all the excitement. Bother.

So, I’m sitting on the balcony, stuffing my head full of fantasy with an amazing book. I realized too late that this would not help my insomnia; I was hooked and would likely be up all night. But I could survive on coffee for a day. I’d done that plenty of times before. Suddenly, I stopped midsentence and listened. There was a quiet padding noise above me, then a slight Scrkkk, as if … I wracked my brain to understand the sound. It was as if … Amber had come out on the balcony, barefoot, and the scratching sound meant she must have rubbed her fingers across the sand-encrusted wax on her surfboard. Nailed it.

I was about to call out a greeting but stopped short. I felt I shouldn’t say anything, as if someone had shushed me, telling me there was something I was supposed to hear first. I got the sense she hadn’t discovered my presence yet. Tipping my head back, I caught a glimpse of her. She was leaning over the edge, looking out at the sea. The fringes of her T-shirt fluttered in the breeze, as did wisps of her hair, which were dancing and kissing her face. But she didn’t bother to brush them away. Concern hit me when I saw the look in her eyes. Emptiness. Longing. Sorrow. Within a few moments, her phone lit up, illuminating her sad face. She looked down at it and smiled a little bit. And quietly, so very quietly, she began to whisper.

“Happy birthday, Ashley.” My mind balked. Ashley? Happy birthday? But, it’s Amber’s birthday. Then who is … ? Wait, does Amber have a twin?! “What’s it feel like to turn twenty-six?” Amber went on. “Same as last year, or does it get better? Well, I guess you were twenty-six four minutes ago. I was only just ‘born’ now,” she said with a small chuckle.

I glanced at my watch. 11:11. That’s a cool time. And I guess Amber does have a twin. Amber and Ashley. That has a nice ring to it. I wonder if they’re identical. I frowned. I hope I’ve been talking to the same one all along ... I felt bad for eavesdropping, if that’s what it was, but I couldn’t help but feel I was somehow meant to hear this. My attention returned to the present. Amber sighed.

“Oh, Ashley, I miss you so much. You’d love it here. It’s not cold,” she said with a little laugh. “It’s sunny and warm. None of that miserable slush we used to trudge through. I can’t help but hope … that I can stay here. Not just for six months, or seven, or even eight.
